mysql admin - access denied for user root@localhost

Hi

I am trying to install mysql admin on my local environment but I am facing the error in index.php :

connection to serve failed
access denied for user root@localhost (using password:YES)

how can I verifuy this ?

I have been trying to check my local environment (mac os 10.6.8 + mysql extracted binary)

mysql is working fine

I can connect to it through command line , also I am accessing my dbs using eclipse ...

should I check /etc/hosts ?

I have changed PASS.php info to 127.0.0.1 as well and it is facing the same error at the login

no info printed in my apache log

apache and mysql are in the same computer ...
