Database Diagram

I have been playing with the Database diagram tool, very nice but I'm not sure that I can figure out how to do what I want. Here's the question.

Can I design the schema for a database without having to create the physical tables? It seems that they are created as you add things to the diagram and that they are tightly coupled to the database you are working on.

Looking to create diagrams and export SQL when diagram is completed, not necessarily generating tables as I go.
