installing new version, rebuilt machine, etc

Hi, just rebuilt my laptop. 8.1 didn't play nicely.
I went to download code compare, couldn't find a pro link, so downloaded the demo assuming there would be somewhere to enter the license. Can't see one. Uninstalled, installed the copy of pro I archived at the time. 2.8. It happily tells me there is an update, but it refuses to log in using the credentials I gave it. I know they work, I can log in directly to the web site with them.
So the question(s) does my 2.8 license cover me for 3, or is the "can't log in" error just a cover for "You're not licensed for 3? That was my main guess. Otherwise, where do I get a latest pro download? Is there an issue with the in app update process for 2.8->3?
Thanks
