Does anyone know or use any free or reasonably priced easy to use tools to generate front end php pages to access the databases and update records etc.

We don't have a tool for this.

Get yourself a copy of Adobes Dreamweaver, from there you can easily create all types of web pages and connections to your database.
If you want real easy then go to DMXzone and look at their easy to use extensions for DW.
