Bad attempt to open a connection during injection container validation

Post by marcwittke » Tue 30 Oct 2018 10:44

I Have a rather complex .net4.7/netstandard2.0 solution that comprises SimpleInjector as dependency injection container. One of the features I like most is its ability to verify the container's configuration on startup and display detailed diagnostics on errors and even bad decisions.

However, it seems that Devart DotConnect for Oracle doesn't play nicely with this approach. Whenever I am verifying my container (that results in all services being instantiated once), someone (obfuscated) opens an oracle connection. Due to a very special customer setup, this will always fail, because the user has to provide userId and password to be able to open a connection. The configured connection string only contains the static parts, having userId and password being patched in before opening a connection:

Code: Select all

Server=(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=localhost)(PORT=1521))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVER=DEDICATED)(SERVICE_NAME=oracle.localdomain))); direct=true; Unicode=true;
This is the stack trace I am seeing:

Code: Select all

System.InvalidOperationException: The configuration is invalid. Creating the instance for type ReadonlyEfUnitOfWork failed. ORA-01005: null password given; logon denied ---> SimpleInjector.ActivationException: ORA-01005: null password given; logon denied ---> Devart.Data.Oracle.OracleException: ORA-01005: null password given; logon denied

It seems to get nasty near Model creation. Unfortunately, obfuscation makes it impossible to understand who to blame here. From my understanding it is bad practice to do such stuff during a constructor call. The constructor should - well - construct instances, no more. I had the same architecture running with EF Core and SqlServer as well as Postgres without any problems. Could you please tell me what to change so that no Oracle connection is being opened on instantiation of DbContext?

Could you please create a small test project for reproducing the issue and upload it to some file exchange server (e.g.: DropBox)?

I just upgraded to version 9.6.646 and the problem is gone. By reading the change log I assume there might be a relation to this bugfix:
The bug with a memory leak in EF Core 2, when a connection is set for DbContext as an OracleConnection instance, and not via a connection string, is fixed
However, issue solved

Thank you for confirming the fix.
