Possible regression: Value cannot be null. (Parameter 'hostname')

Post by markjordan » Tue 21 Jul 2020 12:24

Hi - unfortunately we don't have much detail for this bug, since it's happening on a customer's machine. However, we know the user is getting a "Value cannot be null. (Parameter 'hostname')" error when trying to connect to their database using a build including Devart.Data.Oracle version 9.11.1034, and the error does not happen using previous builds that include version 9.11.980. We also tried giving them an updated private build with just Devart.Data.Oracle downgraded, and that also fixed the crash, so we're reasonably sure that's the problem.

I think this is the relevant stack trace from our logs:

Code: Select all

Value cannot be null. (Parameter 'hostname')
   at Devart.Data.Oracle.h.a(List`1 A_0, String A_1, String A_2, Boolean A_3)
   at Devart.Data.Oracle.di.a(cf A_0, Boolean A_1)
   at Devart.Data.Oracle.di.a(cf A_0, dd A_1)
   at Devart.Data.Oracle.OracleInternalConnection..ctor(cf connectionOptions, OracleInternalConnection proxyConnection)
   at Devart.Data.Oracle.ce.a(i A_0, Object A_1, DbConnectionBase A_2)
   at Devart.Common.DbConnectionFactory.a(DbConnectionPool A_0, i A_1, DbConnectionBase A_2)
   at Devart.Common.DbConnectionPoolGroup.a(DbConnectionPool A_0, DbConnectionBase A_1)

The customer contacted us directly via email. We could not reproduce the issue in our environment and asked the customer for additional information.

Upgrade to v9.12.1064. We have implemented a "blind" fix.

If this doesn't help, specify your platform.

I got the Problem too, if i try to add an Devart Entity Model to an Dotnet Core 2.1 Project in Visual Studio Version 16.7.2 DotConnect For Oracle 9.12.1064.0
with ConnectionString:
user id=***;password=**********;server=*****;direct=True;service name=****;persist security info=True

Saying Value cannot be null, Parameter Name: hostNameOrAddress

I also have this issue.

Code: Select all

var connectionBuilder = new OracleConnectionStringBuilder()
{
    Server = "<name>",
    Port = <port>,
    ServiceName = "<sid>",
    UserId = "<username>",
    LicenseKey = @"<license>",
    Password = "<password>",
    Direct = true,
};
Results in:

Code: Select all

Value cannot be null. (Parameter 'hostname')
Just tried 9.12.1064. The most recent release that I can use is 9.11.980.

Also, it may just happen when using direct mode. I didn't do much testing, but did get the most recent client working without direct mode.

I got the Problem too, if i try to add an Devart Entity Model to an Dotnet Core 2.1 Project in Visual Studio Version 16.7.2 DotConnect For Oracle 9.12.1064.0
with ConnectionString:
user id=***;password=**********;server=*****;direct=True;service name=****;persist security info=True

Saying Value cannot be null, Parameter Name: hostNameOrAddress
Please provide us with the following information via contact form:

1. Your actual connection string (hide only User Id and Password). We will check if there are any special symbols.

2. The values of your system variables:
a) AppDomain.CurrentDomain.FriendlyName
b) Environment.MachineName
c) Environment.UserName

I also have this issue.

Code: Select all

var connectionBuilder = new OracleConnectionStringBuilder()
{
    Server = "<name>",
    Port = <port>,
    ServiceName = "<sid>",
    UserId = "<username>",
    LicenseKey = @"<license>",
    Password = "<password>",
    Direct = true,
};
Results in:

Code: Select all

Value cannot be null. (Parameter 'hostname')
Just tried 9.12.1064. The most recent release that I can use is 9.11.980.

Also, it may just happen when using direct mode. I didn't do much testing, but did get the most recent client working without direct mode.

Is it possible to establish a connection directly to your Oracle server from our network? If so, please create a test Oracle user that has only CREATE SESSION privilege (provide connection string via our contact form).

We need to reproduce the error to localize and fix the problem.

We also opened a ticket on August 28th and it still hasn't been resolved.

The problem is present when we try to connect via SERVICE_NAME while it works correctly via SID

hi,

We also ran into this problem when we upgraded the component.

The host at this customer is defined in the connection string like 'server.x.y.z'
it's also a clustered database.
Error is not occurring at all oracle installations

We downgrade the version to 9.11.980 for this customer to solve the issue.
