Display problems - Windows 10 with 4K display

I've just upgraded to a new system with two displays - one 4K, the other 1920x1200. On both displays, many icons and buttons are rendered too small to be usable...

any suggestions? I tried updating the compatibility settings (windows properties) to 'Vista', but that didn't help.
