NLS_LANG Direct Connect

Reading through the forum, it seems that as long as my client os language is set to English and the server is set to AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8MSWIN1252, then the transliteration will be successful. Does direct mode support changing the characterset?

Provided that the regional settings of your computer correspond to the nls_lang server variable, strings should be processed properly in the Direct mode. Also, the Direct mode supports unicode connections.

Can you explain a little bit more in detail what to check in direct mode to match right nls language.
